In the spirit of a # TODO in your source code, these are the things that I’ve set myself up to completely forget to do complete by the end of 2023. Will see you back here in a year to see how I did!

Write A Game

Like many developers, gaming was my gateway into programming and computers. Although I wrote a few smaller games a long time ago for the Commodore 64, it’s been a long time since I’ve done anything other than start up writing a game, only to be distracted by building a game engine instead, then getting bored and forgetting about it. 2023 is the year this changes. Or at least, I hope it does. Not entirely sure yet what kind of game it should be, but ideally, something not too big that I can bite off in a year. Initial genres under consideration are randomly-generated games of some sort (not necessarily roguelikes though), and shoot-em-ups.

Fluid Simulation

I’ve been fascinated with randomly generated worlds for some time now, and would love to spend some time looking into how I might simulate some aspects of one. Navier-Stokes equations seem to be the best starting point for something that would not only have a real-world effect, but look good if rendered nicely. Having a look at implementing something to do with NS would allow me to look into the physics simulation, as well as potentially playing around with rendering this on-screen, so hopefully scratches a couple of itches at once.

Moar Gigs

Later 2022 saw us attending gigs a bit more regularly. This felt a bit weird, having lived and worked through both Covid lockdowns and a move out of the city we’d lived in for close to 20 years into a more rural setting. But although it was weird, it was great to get back to see live music, and I want to ensure this continues this year.

Staying Fit

As opposed to getting fit, which was my New Year’s Resolution for the last 15 years. Last year saw me start attending CrossFit classes, and the group I train with have encouraged and motivated me. I even had a good stint of attending 6am sessions, something I didn’t think was actually physically possible. With a significant world rotational anniversary event occurring in 2024, I want to make sure I’m as fit as possible for it.

Write More Blog Posts

Self explanatory. Let’s see how this one goes1. :)

  1. True story, started a post last year on procrastination, but then never finished it. ↩︎
